Vietnam plans massive railway expansion in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

Vietnam is advancing major railway infrastructure projects in its two largest urban centers, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The Ministry of Construction reports plans to develop 46 urban rail lines totaling over 2,000 kilometers, with an aim for operational status by 2030.

Hanoi is slated to host 18 lines covering 979 kilometers, with 11 projects already in various stages of development or preparation. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City will feature 28 lines spanning 1,024 kilometers, with eight priority lines targeted for completion by 2030.

In addition to urban transit, a broader regional plan for the Ho Chi Minh City hub proposes seven new railway lines with an estimated investment requirement of over 544 trillion VND. This long-term development includes high-speed North-South rail links and connections to major ports like Hiep Phuoc and Long An, aiming to meet significantly rising freight and passenger demands through 2050.
