Vietnam to install highway signage to enforce safe following distances

The Traffic Police Department of the Ministry of Public Security has requested the Vietnam Directorate of Roads to install signage and road markings at 77 locations across 16 expressways. This initiative aims to facilitate the enforcement of penalties for drivers who fail to maintain safe following distances.

Representatives from the Vietnam Directorate of Roads have instructed road management units, provincial departments, the Vietnam Expressway Development Investment Corporation (VEC), and BOT project enterprises to review and install signaling systems to determine safe distances between motor vehicles. These entities are required to report their progress by October 31.

The implementation of these markings is expected to impact driver behavior, particularly on high-traffic routes such as those connecting Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh, Dau Giay, or Trung Luong. The measures aim to address common issues like lane weaving and tailgating, which often occur during peak hours or due to drivers attempting to prevent others from cutting in front of them.
