Vietnam to reach secondary emerging market status via FTSE Russell upgrade
Vietnam is set to officially transition from frontier market to secondary emerging market status under the FTSE Russell classification on September 21, 2026. This reclassification follows years of regulatory and infrastructure reforms aimed at aligning the nation's capital markets with international standards.
The upgrade will trigger significant changes in global index compositions. Twenty-seven Vietnamese stocks are scheduled for inclusion in the FTSE Global All Cap Index. This inclusion will be implemented in four phases through 2027, beginning with a 10 percent investable weight in September 2026. Analysts estimate that these changes could drive substantial passive inflows, with some estimates suggesting total inflows related to the 27 stocks could reach approximately $1.8 billion over the following year.
In preparation for the transition, the FTSE Vietnam 30 Index has undergone major restructuring, seeing a turnover rate of 71.28% as 10 stocks were added and 9 were removed. Major global asset managers, including Vanguard and BlackRock, are closely monitoring the development. While passive inflows are expected to follow the index rebalancing, some active investors remain cautious, citing concerns regarding market depth and liquidity.
Vietnamese government officials, including Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, have emphasized that this upgrade marks the beginning of a new development cycle for the country's financial markets, intended to attract long-term international capital and support economic growth.
