Vietnam tracks first 2026 tropical low pressure system in the East Sea

The National Hydro-Meteorological Center of Vietnam reported that on 3‑4 June a tropical low pressure system (ATNĐ) formed in the eastern part of the East Sea, with its centre near 17° N‑115° E, about 270 km east of the Hoàng Sa islands. The system moved northeast at 10‑25 km/h toward Taiwan, with wind speeds of force 6 and gusts reaching force 8, generating sea waves of 2‑4 m. Forecasts warned of heavy rain, thunderstorms, possible tornadoes and strong gusts across northern and central Vietnam, with no landfall expected.

The system later centred near 19.6° N‑117.8° E, about 650 km east‑northeast of Hoàng Sa, maintaining force 6 winds and force 8 gusts. Risk level was set to three. Simultaneously, a heat warning was issued for northern and central Vietnam, with temperatures projected up to 38‑39 °C and humidity as low as 45‑55 %. The forecasts also noted a likely transition to an El Niño phase from June to August 2026, with a probability over 90 %.
