Vietnam traffic police fine motorcyclist for phone use, warn of fake violation SMS scams

Hanoi traffic police identified a 26‑year‑old motorcyclist, N. A. D., who was caught using a hand‑held phone while riding on 19 June. He was penalised with a fine of VND 800,000‑1,000,000 and a deduction of four points from his licence, in line with Decree 168/2024. Police reminded motorists to avoid handling phones while operating vehicles to prevent accidents.

The Traffic Police of Tây Ninh province issued a warning about a new fraud scheme that sends text messages claiming traffic‑violation fines. The messages contain links that mimic the National Public Service Portal, displaying fabricated violation details and low‑value fines. Victims who click the links are led to a counterfeit site that harvests banking credentials, enabling theft of funds. Authorities advise the public not to follow unknown links, to verify any notice through official channels, and to use the VNeTraffic app for authentic penalty information.
