Vietnam traffic police intensify fines

Overview

The nationwide traffic‑safety campaign launched under Decree 168/2024 has continued to broaden its reach through August 2026. Police in Hưng Yên fined a driver 20‑26 million VND for covering a licence plate with a “funeral‑vehicle” sign, while in Quảng Trị two motorists who crossed a railway at a red signal each received 19 million VND fines and licence suspensions of up to three months. Hanoi’s “cold‑fine” programme logged 1,872 violations between 27 July and 2 August, including 112 detections by AI‑enabled cameras. In Hue, traffic police processed more than 2,700 camera‑captured offences during the first seven months of 2026.

Enforcement on major expressways remains a priority. On the Hanoi - Lang Son Expressway, a truck driver in Bac Ninh was fined 45 million VND and received an 11-month licence suspension after video footage showed him performing reckless maneuvers and cutting off another vehicle near Quang Chau Industrial Park on July 28. Additionally, between August 5 and 7, authorities on the Nội Bài–Lào Cai highway intercepted a car driver and a motorbike rider for severe alcohol violations and speeding. The car driver, recording a breath‑alcohol concentration of 0.949 mg/L, was fined 40 million VND and had his licence suspended for 23 months; the motorbike rider, with a reading of 0.83 mg/L, was fined 14 million VND and received the same suspension.

Commercial‑vehicle operators exceeding four continuous hours of driving are fined 3‑5 million VND per driver and 8‑12 million VND per company. The crackdown, supported by AI cameras and public-reporting platforms, remains aimed at reducing fatalities and injuries nationwide.
