Vietnam traffic police issue millions in fines for vehicle violations

Police in several Vietnamese provinces have imposed heavy penalties for a range of traffic offences. In Hưng Yên, a driver was fined 20‑26 million VND for covering the licence plate with a “funeral‑vehicle” sign. In Quảng Trị, two drivers who crossed a railway at a red signal were each fined 19 million VND and had their licences suspended for up to three months. Hanoi’s “cold‑fine” programme recorded 1,872 violations between 27 July and 2 August, including 112 cases detected by AI‑enabled cameras. Hue’s traffic police (CSGT) processed more than 2,700 violations captured by cameras and handheld speed devices during the first seven months of 2026. On two highways, drivers who operated commercial vehicles for more than four continuous hours were each fined 3‑5 million VND and lost two licence points, while the owning companies faced fines of 8‑12 million VND. In Hanoi, two teenagers were cited for riding a motorbike without a licence plate or helmet and were handed over to local authorities for further action. Across the country, the coordinated enforcement actions demonstrate a crackdown on unsafe driving and a push to improve road safety.
