Vietnam Traffic Police issue safety warnings following multi-vehicle accidents
The Vietnam Traffic Police Department has issued safety advisories following several multi-vehicle accidents and recurring traffic violations.
To mitigate collision risks at intersections, authorities recommend that drivers emerging from side roads or alleys come to a complete stop for 3 to 5 seconds. This pause allows drivers to observe both directions and ensure it is safe to enter the main road. The department noted that many accidents stem from a lack of awareness regarding right-of-way rules, which are codified in the 2024 Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety.
Additionally, the department addressed the importance of maintaining safe following distances after recent multi-vehicle pileups. In one incident on National Highway 1 in Bac Ninh, seven vehicles were involved in a collision caused by drivers failing to observe safe distances. In another incident on the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong expressway, five vehicles collided due to inadequate spacing during high traffic density. Drivers who fail to maintain safe distances and cause accidents face fines ranging from 20 to 22 million VND and a 10-point deduction from their driver's licenses.
