Vietnam upgrades coal handling at Quang Trạch Power Plant to boost capacity

The Quang Trạch Power Center in Vietnam is completing its coal‑port infrastructure to allow larger shipments and ensure fuel supply for the Quang Trạch 1 thermal power project. Dredging work at the port is slated for completion in June 2026, after which vessels up to 100,000 tonnes can be received, building on a recent permit for ships up to 70,000 tonnes.

Coal‑unloading facilities, conveyors and auxiliary systems are being tested and calibrated. Three test shipments totaling 162,000 tonnes have already been off‑loaded, with a fourth shipment of about 86,000 tonnes under way. The plant is more than 99 % complete, and unit 1 is proceeding with trial runs aimed at commercial operation, while preparations continue for unit 2. The upgrades address Vietnam’s current power‑reserve shortfall, which experts say is now the main risk to the grid rather than a lack of generation capacity.
