Vietnam Vice Premier proposes agricultural and aquaculture trading platform

Vietnam Vice Premier Ho Quoc Dung has called for the study of a dedicated trading platform for agricultural and aquaculture products. The initiative aims to increase market transparency and prevent farmers from suffering losses during periods of oversupply.

During a meeting in Hanoi, officials reported that in the first ten months of 2026, the value of agricultural, forestry, and aquaculture exports reached an estimated $62.89 billion, a 7.8% year-on-year increase. Imports for the same period rose 9.2% to $44.28 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of approximately $18.6 billion.

Despite these gains, the sector faces several challenges. Rice cultivation area for the autumn-winter crop decreased by 12%, potentially impacting supply in the Mekong Delta. Additionally, certain commodities like pork, poultry, and sugar are facing price pressures due to abundant supply and uneven consumer purchasing power. While coffee export volumes rose by 18.1%, the total export value for coffee fell by 5.4%.
