Vietnam agricultural and aquaculture sector developments

Overview

In late 2026, Vietnam reported significant growth in its agricultural, forestry, and aquaculture sectors, with exports reaching an estimated $62.89 billion in the first ten months of the year. Despite a trade surplus of approximately $18.6 billion, the sector faced challenges such as decreasing rice cultivation areas and price pressures on commodities like pork, poultry, and sugar.

To address market transparency and prevent losses from oversupply, Vice Premier Ho Quoc Dung proposed the study of a dedicated trading platform for agricultural and aquaculture products.

Concurrently, farmers across various regions are diversifying livelihoods to improve economic stability. In Thac Ba commune, some producers are returning to traditional Chiem huong rice varieties, while others are transitioning from crops to fish farming. In Quang Tri province, new models include oyster farming using floating rafts, sea moss cultivation, and cobia farming in plastic cages.
