Vinh rainfall breaks 41-year record amid heavy flooding
Vietnam is experiencing significant weather disturbances, highlighted by record-breaking rainfall in Vinh, Nghe An Province. On September 19, 2026, the Vinh station recorded 399 mm of rain, breaking a 41-year September record previously held by a 387.9 mm measurement from 1985. This extreme downpour caused severe flooding on major streets, stalling numerous vehicles and disrupting traffic.
Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has affected a broad corridor from Nghe An to Quang Tri. Other notable measurements include 157 mm in Ho Xuan Hoa, Ha Tinh, and 146 mm in Dong Hoi, Quang Tri. The intense weather has led to flooding in residential areas, such as the GreenView 2 apartment basement in Nghe An, which submerged approximately 30 motorbikes and other property under 2 meters of water.
Meteorologists warn that the country may face 8 to 10 more heavy rain periods through the end of 2026. Forecasts indicate continued heavy rain and thunderstorms for the South Central Coast, Central Highlands, and Southern Vietnam through late September, posing risks of flash floods, landslides, and localized flooding. From early 2026 to mid-September, natural disasters in Vietnam have resulted in 63 deaths and disappearances.
