Vietnamese banks to halt services for customers with expired ID cards from 2026

Starting in 2026, major Vietnamese banks—including Vietcombank, BIDV, Agribank, VietinBank and Military Bank (MB)—will suspend money‑transfer, cash‑withdrawal and online banking functions for customers whose national identity cards are expired or not updated in the banks' systems. Under the current Identity Card Law, citizens must renew their cards at the ages of 14, 25, 40 and 60, meaning people born in 2001, 1986 and 1966 will reach mandatory renewal points in 2026.

Banks are conducting a large‑scale data cleanse based on the State Bank of Vietnam’s Circular 17, giving themselves authority to block services when a customer's identification data is inaccurate or outdated. Transactions will be automatically rejected until the customer updates the card information, either by visiting the police bureau for renewal or by uploading new documents through the bank’s digital app. Financial experts advise customers to check the expiry date on their ID cards now and complete any required renewal to avoid interruption of banking services.
