Vietnamese citizens urged to verify ID number usage after data leaks
Vietnamese personal identification numbers (CCCD) are increasingly being exposed through online registrations, loan applications, and lost documents, creating opportunities for fraud such as unauthorized bank loans, SIM card registration and other scams. Under the new telecommunications law effective 1 July 2024, phone subscribers are legally responsible for numbers registered in their name, prompting authorities to advise citizens to check which mobile numbers are linked to their ID.
To audit their ID usage, people can send the free SMS code “TTTB” to 1414, which returns a list of phone numbers registered with their CCCD. They are also encouraged to review their credit history and any outstanding loans through the National Credit Information Center (CIC) website or the CIC Credit Connect mobile app. Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately to the relevant bank, mobile carrier or police.
