Vietnamese farmers diversify livelihoods through agriculture and aquaculture

Farmers in various regions of Vietnam are adopting new production methods to enhance local economies. In Thac Ba commune, residents are focusing on high-quality agricultural products. To preserve the reputation of local Bach Ha rice, some farmers are returning to the traditional Chiem huong rice variety, which offers high yields and good taste compared to hybrid varieties. Additionally, some farmers are transitioning from traditional crop cultivation to aquaculture, such as fish farming, to maximize land utility.

In Quang Tri province, new livelihood models are emerging through marine and river-based aquaculture. In the Vung Chua – Dao Yen area, residents are experimenting with ocean oyster and milk oyster farming using floating rafts. This initiative aims to utilize natural food sources and reduce dependence on industrial feed. Alongside oysters, pilot programs for sea moss cultivation and cobia farming in plastic cages are being implemented to diversify aquatic products and improve economic stability.
