Vietnamese military teams recover war dead remains in Laos and Cambodia

Vietnam's military command units have continued a multi‑decade effort to locate and repatriate the remains of soldiers who disappeared during the war. In the forested borders of Laos’s Xiangkhouang province, the Nghệ An provincial casualty‑collection team conducts annual dry‑season expeditions, following tips from local residents, using GPS devices, shovels and digging equipment. The teams live and work alongside villagers, providing medical aid, clothing and infrastructure repairs, and have occasionally uncovered fragments of tanks and other personal items, though many searches end without a find.

In the Mekong Delta, the An Giang provincial Teams K92 and K93 celebrated the completion of their 2025‑2026 dry‑season mission, during which they located 170 remains – 128 from Cambodia and 42 within An Giang. Over the past 25 years the two teams have recovered a total of 6,871 war‑dead remains, including 4,414 from Cambodia, and have identified 582 of them. The ceremony highlighted both the military importance of the work and the humanitarian assistance the teams provide to local communities in Cambodia and Vietnam, such as free medical clinics and road repairs.
