Vietnamese police warn of QR code scams and POS misuse

Authorities in Vietnam are issuing warnings regarding new methods of financial fraud involving digital payment tools. Police in Tay Ninh province have alerted the public to “quishing”—a combination of QR codes and phishing. Scammers use fraudulent QR codes placed in public areas, such as payment counters, parking lots, or social media posts, to redirect users to malicious websites or fake login pages designed to steal personal information and banking credentials.

Separately, Hanoi Police have highlighted illegal practices involving Point of Sale (POS) terminals. Some businesses and households are reportedly using POS devices to facilitate fake transactions. This scheme involves creating transactions that do not involve actual goods or services to help individuals withdraw cash or “roll over” credit card debt. These fraudulent activities bypass the intended purpose of digital payment systems, which are meant to ensure transparency in the digital economy.
