Vietnamese teacher injured saving student from truck

Hoàng Thị Hiền, a preschool teacher at Phú Sơn Kindergarten in Nghệ An province, is undergoing intensive medical treatment after heroically saving a 2-year-old student from an oncoming truck on August 28.

While shielding the child from the vehicle, Ms. Hiền was struck in both legs. She was initially treated in Nghệ An before being transferred to Viet Duc University Hospital in Hanoi due to the severity of her injuries. Medical reports indicate that while her left foot has stabilized, her right foot suffered complex crushing injuries and necrosis, necessitating multiple surgeries. Some reports indicate she has had to undergo an amputation of the right lower leg.

In response to her bravery, the Ministry of Education and Training, led by Deputy Minister Nguyễn Thị Quyên Thanh, has recognized her actions. Minister Hoàng Minh Sơn has decided to award her a Certificate of Merit. Local officials from Nghệ An province and the Vietnam Education Union have also visited to provide support and financial assistance. Ms. Hiền is a single mother of two young children.
