Vietnamese teacher injured during student rescue
Overview
On August 28, Hoang Thi Hien, a 32-year-old preschool teacher at Phu Son Kindergarten in Nghe An province, was severely injured while shielding a two-year-old student from an oncoming truck. Ms. Hien was struck in both legs and transferred to Viet Duc University Hospital in Hanoi for intensive treatment. Due to complex crushing injuries and necrosis, doctors were forced to amputate her right leg above the knee to save her life, while her left leg remains under medical care.
In response to her actions, the Ministry of Education and Training and local officials provided recognition and financial assistance. Following a three-day fundraising appeal by the Vietnam Fatherland Front of Nghe An province, nearly 9,000 contributors donated over 2 billion VND. On September 17, President To Lam signed a decision to award Ms. Hien the Bravery Medal, and the Ministry of Education and Training issued a formal commendation.
Ms. Hien has since been transferred to Cua Dong General Hospital in Nghe An for continued care and functional rehabilitation. The hospital announced it will cover all medical and accommodation costs for Ms. Hien and her family during her recovery. Doctors at the facility plan to assess her progress to determine the appropriate prosthetic limb once her health stabilizes. Additionally, the Nghe An Provincial Women's Union presented her with a certificate of merit on behalf of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union to recognize her bravery.
During a visit to offer encouragement, Nguyen Xuan Tai, Director of Cua Dong General Hospital, reaffirmed the facility’s commitment to covering her expenses. Despite her injuries, Ms. Hien, a single mother of two, has expressed a resilient spirit, stating she would still act to save her student if given the chance. She is currently focused on rehabilitation with the goal of eventually returning to teaching.
