Tuyen Quang math exam scandal prompts redo proposal and arrests

In Tuyen Quang province, an extraordinary concentration of perfect scores in the math module of the 2026 high‑school graduation exam raised suspicions of irregularities. Analysis of the results showed that 147 of the 154 perfect‑score papers came from the Specialized High School, with more than 90% of the 328 candidates scoring nine points or higher.

Provincial education authorities reported that the abnormal pattern was linked to misconduct during invigilation. Police have detained maths teacher Nguyễn Hà Duy and deputy principal Trần Thị Thu Hằng, accusing them of abusing their positions to guide students during the exam. Both were charged under the criminal code for “abuse of office while performing official duties.”

Parents and students at the school, 100% of those surveyed, formally requested a re‑examination to ensure fairness. The Tuyen Quang People's Committee has forwarded this request to the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), which has said it will issue a decision after the investigation is completed. The provincial education department also proposed installing non‑networked surveillance cameras in exam rooms and acquiring metal detectors to strengthen exam security.

The incident has attracted national attention, prompting a joint verification task force of the MOET and the Ministry of Public Security, and a directive from the Deputy Prime Minister to review the entire 2026 graduation exam process across the country.
