Vietnamese universities aim for deeper quality to boost global rankings

A conference titled “From Data to Position: Research, Sustainable Development and Global Presence of Vietnamese Universities” was held in Hanoi on 15 July. The event, organized by VinUni in partnership with Times Higher Education (THE), brought together officials from the Ministry of Education and Training and leaders of universities in the North and Central regions, including National University Hanoi, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, National Economics University and Hanoi Medical University.

THE’s APAC chair Mei Mei Lim stressed that international standing should result from genuine quality rather than rank‑chasing, adding that data must support decision‑making and that rankings are a tool, not an end point. Ministry officials Huỳnh Văn Chương and Nguyễn Thu Thủy highlighted the shift toward evidence‑based management, saying accurate, transparent data helps schools identify strengths, gaps and opportunities in teaching, research, resource allocation and graduate employability. The ministry’s Resolution 71‑NQ/TW sets a target for at least one Vietnamese university to enter the global top‑100 rankings by 2030.
