Vietnam's EVN hits record electricity output as heatwave spikes demand

A prolonged heatwave in late June drove Vietnam's national grid to a new production record. On 25 June 2026, total electricity generated and imported reached over 1.215 billion kWh, the highest daily output recorded by state utility EVN. For June 2026 the system produced and imported 32.6 billion kWh, a 14 % rise from the same month a year earlier, while the first half of the year saw 171.54 billion kWh, up 9.85 %.

Coal‑fired plants supplied the bulk of the increase, delivering an extra 10 % to 93.44 billion kWh and accounting for about 56 % of the added generation. Gas‑fired output rose 33 % (+3.44 billion kWh) and imports surged 83 % to 5.93 billion kWh, though imports still represented only a small share of total supply. Hydropower fell slightly, while renewable generation changed modestly, with solar output rising and wind output falling.

Peak system load hit 57,537 MW on 24 June. EVN warned that high‑temperature conditions could keep demand elevated through July and August, urging large consumers to shift loads and preparing to mobilise additional diesel generators and storage solutions. The utility projects total 2026 generation and imports of 358.6 billion kWh, an 11.1 % increase over 2025.
