Vietnam's Hanoi tourism hits 18 million visitors as Cao Bang pushes sustainable growth

Hanoi welcomed more than 18 million tourists from January to June 2026, a 15.7% year‑on‑year increase, generating an estimated VND 74.23 trillion (US$2.8 billion) in revenue. Hotel occupancy averaged 65.6% and the city was ranked second in Asia and fourth worldwide by TripAdvisor’s 2026 Travelers’ Choice awards. Officials aim to attract over nine million international visitors and 27 million domestic travelers by year‑end.

In the northern province of Cao Bang, viral social‑media videos have boosted its profile as an affordable destination. Local tourism leaders acknowledge the surge but warn that low‑cost expectations limit spending. They are seeking to reposition the province toward immersive experiences that encourage longer stays, higher expenditure, and a night‑time economy featuring cultural performances and curated culinary spaces. The shift responds to younger travelers’ preference for independent, photography‑focused trips rather than traditional package tours.
