Vietnam's Khmer community preserves intangible cultural heritage
The Khmer community in southern Vietnam continues to safeguard its traditional performing arts. The Chhay‑dam drum dance, which blends choreography, martial‑arts acrobatics and music, was entered on Vietnam's National Intangible Cultural Heritage list for Tay Ninh province in 2015 and for An Giang province in 2025. The same recognition covers the five‑tone orchestra (Ngu am) and the craft of mask‑making for the “Chan” dance, both symbolising spiritual protection and community prosperity. Artisans such as 62‑year‑old Kim Manh of Vinh Long province demonstrate the meticulous process of creating ceremonial masks, while folk troupes perform the dances in temples during major festivals. These practices are taught to younger generations to ensure the culture endures amid modern life.
