Vietnam's Martyrs' Day Drives Efforts to Identify Hundreds of Missing War Victims

On 28 July 2026, the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) joined Vietnam’s nationally televised Martyrs’ Day ceremony in Hanoi. ICMP Commissioner Thâo Griffiths, former U.S. Ambassador Marc Knapper, program manager Chau Nguyen and senior scientific adviser Tom Parsons attended alongside senior Vietnamese officials, honoring those lost in decades of conflict and reaffirming support for families still seeking answers.

Vietnam faces one of the world’s largest unresolved missing‑persons challenges, with roughly 200,000 former personnel still unaccounted for and an estimated 300,000 sets of human remains yet to be identified. Since 2020, ICMP has partnered with Vietnam’s Center for DNA Identification, the Institute of Biotechnology of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the Vietnam Wartime Accounting Initiative to apply advanced DNA technologies and forensic standards.

In a related effort, a 500‑day campaign concluded with the recovery of 1,488 martyrs’ remains, marking a significant step toward accounting for the missing and underscoring the ongoing commitment to resolve Vietnam’s wartime losses.
