Vietnam's Mekong Delta Expands Shrimp Export and Rice Collaboration with Japan

In the Mekong Delta, the seafood firm Tùng Loan Co. in Vĩnh Phước, Ca Mau province has built a full‑value‑chain for green tiger shrimp (tôm càng xanh). The company purchases 7–9 tonnes of live shrimp daily from local producers, processes over 100 tonnes each month and ships more than half of its output to Thailand, with additional shipments to Australia and Hong Kong. By paying farmers 10,000–20,000 VND /kg above market rates, Tùng Loan has created jobs for more than 100 local workers, earning each worker a daily wage of roughly 350,000–400,000 VND and offering a stable market for tens of thousands of households that practice the rice‑shrimp rotation.

Meanwhile, a Can Tho‑based firm, Nông nghiệp Gạo hữu cơ, is seeking to partner with Vinh Long’s agricultural extension services to market Japanese rice varieties. Following a memorandum of understanding between Vinh Long province and Niigata prefecture, the company plans to contract and guarantee the output of about 1,000 ha of high‑quality rice, testing Japanese strains such as NU1, Shindai 5 and Koshihikari. The cooperation aims to boost farmer incomes, improve resilience to drought and salinity, and support joint climate‑mitigation projects, linking Vietnamese producers with Japanese research and market channels.
