Vietnam's Military Holds 'Promise to Mother' Ceremony Honoring War Heroes

On July 23, 2024, the General Political Department of the Vietnam People’s Army staged the political‑art program “Lời hứa với Mẹ” (“Promise to Mother”) in Hanoi.

The event, part of the 79th anniversary of Veterans and Martyrs Day, was attended by senior Party and state officials including Politburo members – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence General Phan Văn Giang and General Nguyễn Trọng Nghĩa, head of the Central Military Commission. It also featured mothers of fallen soldiers, veterans, families of the missing and representatives of the agencies tasked with locating and identifying remains.

Performances, documentary pieces and a dialogue highlighted the ongoing “500‑day night campaign” to search for, collect and identify the skeletal remains of unidentified war heroes, underscoring the state’s commitment to resolve unfinished wartime legacies.
