Vietnam's northern grid hits record electricity demand amid heat wave

On 24 June, Vietnam's national power system reached a new record of 58,456 MW at 13:50, with the northern region supplying 29,970 MW—exceeding the previous peak. The four 500 kV north‑south transmission lines, which provide about 20 % of the north’s electricity, were essential in balancing supply during the extreme heat.

The following day, 25 June, the system logged another high of 57,838 MW nationwide and 30,248 MW in the north, setting 2026 daily consumption records. Widespread rain on 26 June cooled temperatures, reducing the national load by around 6,428 MW. Operators also reported several coal‑fired units encountering faults, prompting short‑term repairs and increased water storage at hydro reservoirs to prepare for future peak demand.
