Vietnam endures intense heatwave as temperatures near 40°C

The National Center for Hydro‑Meteorological Forecasting warns that a severe heatwave is sweeping northern and central Vietnam. From mid‑June through the end of the month, temperatures are expected to reach 35‑40 °C, with localised peaks of 39‑40 °C recorded in places such as Đông Hà (Quảng Trị) and Hương Khê (Hà Tĩnh). The peak period is forecast for 20‑25 June, after which temperatures will gradually fall.

The prolonged heat raises the risk of wild‑fires and heat‑related illnesses, especially in densely populated areas where high humidity and heat stress can increase electricity demand. Simultaneously, heavy rain showers and thunderstorms are predicted in the northern mountains and coastal regions, with some stations reporting more than 100 mm of rain in a short period and wind gusts up to gale force, posing flood and landslide hazards.

Authorities advise the public to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor work during the hottest hours, and be prepared for sudden downpours that may bring hail, strong gusts, or tornado‑like vortices.
