Vietnam and Huawei Accelerate Energy Storage for Renewable Power

Vietnam is revising its Power Development Plan (PDP8) to make battery energy storage systems (BESS) a cornerstone of its transition to net‑zero emissions by 2050. The plan targets 10,000–16,300 MW of storage capacity by 2030, supporting an expected 28–36 % share of renewables (excluding hydropower) and solar capacity of up to 73,416 MW. Officials describe BESS as the "memory" of the grid, storing excess solar power for evening use and enhancing grid stability. The government is also strengthening the legal framework for storage and emphasizing end‑of‑life battery recycling to recover valuable metals.

Huawei’s Digital Power division introduced the Luterra energy‑storage platform, replacing its previous LUNA line. Luterra features a 1 kV AC configuration, silicon‑carbide power modules, a simplified architecture that can cut installation time by about 30 % and costs by over 20 %, and AI‑driven digital‑twin monitoring for safety and performance. The system aims to bolster grid stability as Europe adds more wind and solar capacity.

A broader analysis warns that retrofitting older homes with solar panels, heat pumps and smart systems risks generating additional e‑waste if outdated components are not recycled properly. Experts advise modular designs, take‑back programs and reuse of materials such as copper wiring to limit hazardous waste and support a truly sustainable energy transition.
