Vietnam marks 79th Veterans Day with mass ceremonies and war‑dead recovery
Vietnam commemorated the 79th anniversary of the Day of Veterans and War‑Disabled on 26‑27 July 2026. State leaders including President Tô Lâm, Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn and Party officials attended tribute ceremonies at four historic sites – Le Thi Rieng Park in Ho Chi Minh City, the Bac Son monument in Hanoi, the Duong 9 cemetery in Quảng Trị and the Thanh Thủy site in Tuyên Quang – as part of the live television program “Sao sáng dẫn đường”.
The ceremonies honored fallen heroes and highlighted the ongoing “500‑day‑night” campaign to locate, exhume and identify war‑dead remains. By 26 July, the campaign had recovered a total of 1 488 remains across Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, including 117 individual remains, five collective remains and 66 artefacts at Le Thi Rieng Park. In the Hang Da Sáp cave near Da Nẵng, search teams uncovered nine additional remains. Individual stories such as 70‑year‑old Le Chi Công, the son of heroine Le Thi Rieng, who has spent 58 years searching for his mother’s remains, were highlighted.
Thousands of youths, local officials and more than 18 000 Buddhist temples across the country lit ceremonial candles or rang three bells in tribute. Traffic in Hanoi was temporarily restricted to facilitate the live broadcast. The nationwide observance reinforced Vietnam’s tradition of respecting its war heroes and supporting the families of those who sacrificed for the nation.
