Vietnam's Southern Power Grid Boosts Electricity Output to Meet Heatwave Demand

The Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) in Vietnam maintained a safe and stable electricity supply during the early‑year heatwave. In the first six months, its peak capacity reached 11,115 MW, a 6.64% rise from the same period in 2025, and electricity sales climbed 7.29% to 36.88 TWh. The company accelerated investment, enhanced grid maintenance, and expanded demand‑response programs, securing 2.34 TWh of saved electricity and enrolling nearly 6,000 large consumers in load‑shifting schemes.

Nationally, the state‑owned Vietnam Electricity (EVN) reported a 9.85% increase in total generation, reaching 171.54 TWh in the first half of 2026. A record daily output of 1,215.4 GWh was recorded on 25 June, with maximum system load hitting 57,537 MW. Coal‑fired plants supplied 54.5% of generation, hydro 21%, gas‑turbines 8%, and renewables (solar and wind) 12.9%. To meet peak demand, EVN mobilised additional diesel units and converted some gas‑turbine plants to oil fuel, while urging customers to adopt energy‑saving measures and load‑adjustment plans.
