Vigo health region commits €20 million to specialist resident training

The health area of Vigo will spend €19.8 million this year to fund specialist medical and allied‑health resident training. The funding covers salaries for 141 residents across a range of specialties, including increased places in emergency medicine, ophthalmology, psychiatry and other fields. The investment is part of Galicia’s overall €94.2 million budget for MIR training, with an additional 725 specialist slots slated for the next academic year.

The expansion aims to address shortages in primary care and mental‑health services, with new positions in family medicine, pediatrics and psychiatry, as well as inaugural posts in genetics and other emerging specialties.
