Vigo Mayor urges Xunta to begin Oitavén reservoir construction
Vigo Mayor Abel Caballero has urged the Xunta de Galicia to immediately begin work on a new reservoir upstream on the Oitavén River. Caballero argues that the infrastructure is necessary to increase water storage capacity and prevent current consumption limitations, noting that the existing Eiras dam system is too small to meet demand.
The Mayor criticized the regional government for allegedly stalling the project for 15 years, despite a previous agreement between the Spanish Government, the Xunta, and the Vigo City Council. Caballero described the delay as a serious matter and has called for the resignation of the relevant regional minister.
Caballero stated that the proposed reservoir would be small in scale and would not significantly impact the surrounding environment. Additionally, he mentioned plans to meet with the Mayor of Baiona to discuss water supply solutions, including a potential transfer from Eiras to Zamáns. He also called for urgent action regarding a possible leak in the underwater pipeline between Vigo and Moaña.
