Vigo opposition proposes reinstating 205-euro back-to-school aid

Luisa Sánchez, president of the People's Party (PP) in Vigo, has proposed the reinstatement of a 205-euro municipal subsidy intended to assist families with back-to-school expenses. The aid, which was active during the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years, was reportedly suppressed by the City Council in 2024.

Sánchez estimates that more than 20,000 students in Vigo could benefit from the measure. She argued that the proposal is necessary to help households manage rising costs, noting that the expense of returning to school has increased by 17% over the last eight years, averaging more than 400 euros per student.

The opposition leader also highlighted broader economic pressures facing local families, including inflation, rising fuel prices, and increased municipal taxes, which have risen by over 12% in three years. She urged Mayor Abel Caballero to include this funding in the upcoming municipal budget, asserting that the city's financial health and surplus justify the expenditure.
