Vigo municipal fiscal and social aid debates
Overview
Political opposition groups in Vigo are advocating for fiscal measures to mitigate the rising cost of living and inflation for local residents.
The Bloque Nacionalista Galego (BNG) has called for a freeze on all municipal taxes and fees for 2027. BNG spokesperson Xabier P. Igrexas argued that a “socially just” policy is needed to protect low-income households, criticizing the city council for failing to spend approximately 150 million euros in 2025. The party intends to formally present this demand to Mayor Abel Caballero to prevent tax increases, suggesting new exemptions and bonuses based on income levels.
Concurrently, the People's Party (PP) has proposed reinstating a 205-euro municipal subsidy for back-to-school expenses, a program that was active in previous years but reportedly suppressed by the City Council in 2024. PP president Luisa Sánchez noted that school-related costs have risen by 17% over eight years, averaging more than 400 euros per student.
Sánchez has announced a motion to be presented at an upcoming municipal plenary session to push for this aid, which could benefit an estimated 20,000 students. She criticized the discontinuation of the subsidy without adequate explanation and urged the municipal government to utilize city surpluses—noted as being nearly 200 million euros—to support families facing inflation, rising fuel prices, and municipal taxes that have increased by over 12% in three years.
