Vigo opposition proposes reinstating school aid for families
Luisa Sánchez, president of the People's Party (PP) in Vigo, has announced a motion to be presented at the upcoming municipal plenary session this Monday. The proposal seeks to reinstate a municipal aid program of 205 euros intended to support families with school-aged children during the back-to-school period.
Sánchez criticized Mayor Abel Caballero for discontinuing the subsidy, which was previously granted in 2022, without what she described as adequate explanation. The PP argues that the cost of school supplies has increased significantly, estimating that families face expenses of approximately 400 euros per student, representing a 17% increase over the last eight years.
The opposition leader highlighted the economic pressures facing local households, including inflation, rising fuel costs, and increased taxes. She further noted that the City Council maintains significant savings of nearly 200 million euros, which she argues should be utilized to improve public services and support citizens during economic crises.
