Vigo to supply water to Baiona starting Monday amid regional shortages

The Vigo City Council has announced that it will begin supplying water to the municipality of Baiona starting this Monday to address urgent supply shortages. The water will be sourced from the Eiras system, which is currently experiencing critically low levels, and will be pumped through the Macal system to the Zamáns dam. From Monday, the Zamáns dam will exclusively supply the municipalities of Nigrán and Baiona, delivering 76 liters per second.

Local authorities in Vigo have used the announcement to criticize the “absolute inaction” of the Xunta de Galicia, the regional government. Officials stated that without Vigo’s intervention, Baiona would face a total lack of water. The Vigo administration has called for the resignation of the regional minister and emphasized the need for a new dam upstream of the Oitavén to increase reserve capacity and ensure long-term water security for the region.
