Tamil Nadu secures Rs 15,300 crore in investments during CM Vijay's UK visit

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has secured investment commitments exceeding Rs 15,300 crore during an official visit to the United Kingdom. The agreements, signed in London via the state's investment agency, Guidance Tamil Nadu, are expected to create more than 10,000 jobs across various sectors including advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, and digital infrastructure.

A major component of the deal involves Samvardhana Motherson International Limited, which plans to invest approximately Rs 11,000 crore to establish integrated design, engineering, manufacturing, and logistics facilities in the state. This project alone is projected to generate nearly 7,000 jobs. Other significant agreements include a Rs 1,000 crore commitment from Ernst & Young to establish a Global Capability Centre in Chennai, and a Rs 300 crore investment from UK-based Wilson Power Solutions for transformer manufacturing in Tiruvallur.

The visit has faced political scrutiny. Opposition parties, including the AIADMK, have questioned the necessity of the taxpayer-funded trip, citing the Chief Minister's appearance at the Silverstone motor racing circuit and pointing out that some involved companies have existing Indian headquarters. While critics labeled the trip as mere optics, the state government maintains the mission is vital for positioning Tamil Nadu as a premier technology and manufacturing hub in Asia.
