Tamil Nadu industrial and technology development
Overview
The government of Tamil Nadu has initiated several large-scale industrial development projects and international investment missions to bolster its technology and logistics sectors. Initially, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced the establishment of three major hubs: a semiconductor and electronics manufacturing park in Kancheepuram district, a FinTech Hub in Coimbatore, and a multi-modal logistics hub in Tiruchirappalli. The semiconductor park, developed by SIPCOT, is projected to attract approximately Rs 2,000 crore in investment and create 5,000 jobs.
To support these domestic goals, state officials launched international outreach missions. Industries Minister Keerthana traveled to Taiwan in early September 2026 to participate in the Semicon conference. Following this, Chief Minister Vijay led a high-level delegation to the United Kingdom from September 10 to 16. This mission resulted in investment commitments totaling over Rs 15,300 crore, expected to create more than 10,000 jobs. Key agreements signed in London via Guidance Tamil Nadu include an Rs 11,000 crore investment from Samvardhana Motherson International Limited, a Rs 1,000 crore commitment from Ernst & Young, and investments from Wilson Power Solutions and Sigma Technology Group.
The UK mission faced political scrutiny from opposition parties like the AIADMK regarding the necessity of the trip. During the London visit, a planned public appearance by Chief Minister Vijay near The Shard was cancelled due to crowd safety concerns raised by the Metropolitan Police after hundreds of supporters gathered at the landmark. A member of the Chief Minister’s team announced via loudspeaker that the event could not proceed because “the necessary permissions were not secured due to crowd safety risks.” Following the cancellation, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) IT wing urged supporters to avoid gathering near the Chief Minister’s hotel or travel routes to ensure safety.
