NAV criminal leadership removed amid NVVH launch

The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) has removed its criminal leadership, effective October 1. Ferenc Domokos, the director of the Criminal Directorate, and his deputy, Colonel Gábor László Szűcs, have had their mandates revoked without specific explanation, a move permitted under current laws regarding leadership appointments.

Reports suggest the removals may be linked to two major incidents: the ‘golden convoy’ operation involving the seizure of Ukrainian money transporters, and a fatal incident at a private event in Somogy county where a NAV officer died. These leadership changes follow previous shifts within the organization, including the replacement of Deputy President Tamás Demeter with Attila Sisák in September.

Simultaneously, the newly established National Asset Recovery and Protection Office (NVVH) has begun its operations. NVVH President Anna Unger has defended the agency against criticisms from the Fidesz party, which has compared the organization to the historical ÁVH (State Protection Authority). Unger emphasized that the NVVH is a constitutional body operating within the rule of law.

The NVVH has already initiated investigations into four high-profile cases, including matters involving Áron Orbán's business connections, municipal corruption, and the spending of the Sovereignty Protection Office. The agency expects to deploy a team of 30 to 40 investigators to begin formal proceedings.
