Vila de Rei forest recovery after Storm Kristin
Portugal’s Secretary of State for Forests, Rui Ladeira, visited the municipality of Vila de Rei to review post‑storm recovery work following the damage caused by Storm Kristin. He met with Mayor Paulo César Luís, Vice‑President Rosa Martins, and representatives from municipal civil protection, finance, heritage, planning, works and forestry departments.
The officials examined the cleanup operations carried out since the storm, which inflicted heavy losses on the local forest estate. Key actions highlighted included the removal of fallen timber, clearing of forest roads and the reduction of fuel load to lower the risk of future wildfires. Ladeira emphasized the importance of continued measures to protect both the forest and nearby communities. Mayor Luís said the storm “left deep marks on the Vilarregense forest, requiring an enormous effort from the municipality, partner agencies and forest owners.”
