Vila Galé launches R$100 million hotel and restaurant complex in São Luís historic centre
Portugal‑based hotel group Vila Galé is investing roughly R$100 million to restore historic buildings in the Praia Grande district of São Luís, Brazil. The project will open two upscale hotels – Vila Galé Collection Ópera São Luís on 1 October with 43 rooms, and Vila Galé Collection Poesia São Luís in December with 50 rooms – and a total of five restaurants housed in restored mansions, including the former Casa do Maranhão and the old Defensoria Pública building. The development aims to preserve the architectural heritage while boosting tourism, local commerce and service‑sector jobs.
Group president Jorge Rebelo de Almeida said the company is “addicted to revitalising” historic sites, noting that similar projects have been completed in Rio de Janeiro, Ouro Preto and Belém. The initiative marks Vila Galé’s first entry into the state of Maranhão and is expected to generate sustained visitor traffic and economic activity in the city’s historic centre.
