Vila Nova de Gaia launches free heated pools to offset chilly summer waters

The municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia has opened two free heated‑water pools to make swimming more comfortable during the summer nortada winds. On 23 July a heated pool was inaugurated at Praia Fluvial do Areinho in Oliveira do Douro, capable of accommodating up to 80 users for a maximum of 30 minutes. Access is on a first‑come basis with priority given to children under two, seniors over 65 and people with reduced mobility, and the facility complies with universal‑access standards.

A second heated pool at the Canidelo beach (Canide Norte) already operates year‑round, using solar‑heated seawater to reach about 29 °C. It holds around 50 swimmers, also free of charge, with a 30‑minute stay limit. Both pools are part of the broader “Encostas do Douro” river‑front revitalisation plan, which includes upgraded amenities, parking and seasonal lifeguard services for local residents and visitors.
