Vila Nova de Gaia free heated pools

Overview

In late July 2026 the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia inaugurated a free heated‑water pool on the Areinho river beach in Oliveira do Douro. The pool, which can hold up to 80 users for a maximum of 30 minutes, operates on a first‑come basis with priority for children under two, seniors over 65 and people with reduced mobility, and follows universal‑access design standards.

Earlier in the month a second heated pool was opened at the nearby Canidelo (Canide Norte) beach. This smaller pool, holding about 50 swimmers, uses solar‑heated seawater to maintain a temperature of roughly 29 °C and also offers free, time‑limited access.

Both facilities are part of the broader “Encostas do Douro” river‑front revitalisation plan, which aims to improve access routes, parking, seasonal lifeguard services and other amenities for residents and visitors, while offsetting the chill of the summer nortada winds.
