Villa María New Energy project begins studies in Argentina

A public-private alliance has launched studies for the Villa María New Energy project in Córdoba, Argentina, aimed at producing green hydrogen and e-methanol at an industrial scale.

The project involves a partnership between eab New Energy GmbH and SEG Ingeniería, supported by the H2Uppp International Hydrogen Impulse Program implemented by the German cooperation agency GIZ. The facility is planned to utilize wind and solar energy to power a 200 MW electrolyzer. This process will convert green hydrogen and locally sourced biogenic CO2—captured from the corn-based bioethanol industry—into e-methanol.

Technical projections estimate the complex will generate approximately 20,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually, with a target production of nearly 110,000 tons of e-methanol per year. The initiative seeks to leverage Argentina's abundant renewable resources and established agro-industrial sector to meet international decarbonization and sustainability standards for synthetic fuels.
