Villa Medici announces artist residency competition and film festival

The French Academy in Rome at Villa Medici has announced two upcoming cultural initiatives.

Starting September 4, 2026, the Academy will launch an annual competition to select sixteen fellows for the 2027-2028 term. These fellows, who will reside at Villa Medici for 12 months, will receive a scholarship, housing, and workspace. The competition is open to established artists, authors, and researchers across various disciplines, including music, literature, architecture, design, visual arts, choreography, theater, and art history. While there are no nationality restrictions, applicants must have a good command of the French language.

Additionally, the sixth edition of the Villa Medici Film Festival is scheduled to take place from September 16 to 20, 2026. The festival will feature over 40 screenings, including international competitions, focus programs, and outdoor screenings. The event aims to explore the connections between cinema and contemporary art, showcasing a diverse range of formats from documentaries to experimental films.
