Sicily experiences series of fatal workplace accidents
Sicily has seen a surge in fatal workplace accidents involving several workers in recent days. In Villafrati, 39-year-old blacksmith Giovanni Patricola died at Palermo's Civico Hospital after falling approximately six meters from a balcony during renovation work.
In Modica, 65-year-old truck driver Giovanni Fargione was electrocuted while discharging feed from a tanker. Preliminary reports suggest he accidentally struck high-voltage cables with the vehicle's mechanical arm.
Additionally, a 65-year-old worker died after being injured in a construction site accident in Ripi on October 22. These incidents follow a separate tragedy in Canicattì, where four laborers lost their lives in a vehicle collision on the Statale 123.
Labor unions, including Feneal Uil and Cisl, have condemned the deaths, calling for increased inspections, better training, and stricter enforcement of safety regulations to combat issues such as subcontracting and lack of oversight.
