A major theft occurred at the Villena Museum (MUVI) in Spain, where thieves stole a significant portion of the Treasure of Villena, a vital Bronze Age gold hoard. The heist took place in the early hours of 27 August, triggering the museum's alarm at 05:16.

The incident has sparked political controversy because a Europol warning regarding increased aggression and interest in precious metals at European museums reached the museum on 28 August, more than 30 hours after the theft. Europol had published its report on 24 August, three days before the heist.

The Valencian regional government stated it could not distribute the alert earlier because the Ministry of Culture did not forward it to autonomous communities until 13:18 on 28 August. The Generalitat's museum service then passed the information to MUVI less than an hour later. Villena's mayor, Fulgencio Cerdán, expressed regret, stating, “I’m sure we could have done more.”
