Villena officials investigated after Bronze Age gold treasure theft

Spanish authorities are investigating several officials for negligent damage following the theft of the Bronze Age treasure of Villena. The investigation targets Villena Mayor Fulgencio Cerdán, Museum of Villena (MUVI) director Laura Hernández, Cultural Heritage Councilor María Server, and the institution's security chief.

The legal action, prompted by a complaint from the Asociación para la Defensa del Estado de Derecho (ADED), seeks to determine if officials failed to fulfill their duties in protecting the archaeological collection. A judge has referred the case to the prosecutor's office to decide on potential criminal charges or dismissal.

The theft occurred in the early hours of August 27, when perpetrators entered the museum through a side wall. The thieves reportedly used a diversionary false alarm elsewhere in the city to distract security before breaking display cases and fleeing in fast vehicles. The stolen items consist of a gold jewelry ensemble dating to approximately 1000 BC, considered one of the most significant Bronze Age gold collections in Europe.
